Siding materials, honestly compared

There is no single best siding material. There is only the right trade-off for your climate, your budget and how much upkeep you actually intend to do. Here is what each option is genuinely good and bad at.

Vinyl

The default choice for good reason: lowest installed cost, essentially no maintenance beyond an occasional rinse, and every crew in the country knows how to install it well.

The trade-off is that it is a thin plastic panel. It can crack in a hard impact, it fades gradually with sun exposure, and it looks like vinyl up close no matter how the profile is textured. Expect roughly 20 to 30 years of service before it looks tired, with the caulk at the joints usually failing before the panels themselves do.

Fiber cement

Costs meaningfully more than vinyl, both in material and in labor, because it is heavier and has to be cut with different tools. In exchange you get a rigid, paintable panel that holds its shape, resists impact far better than vinyl, and is not a fuel source the way some other sidings are.

The trade-off is maintenance: it needs to be repainted on a schedule, and skipping that schedule shortens its life considerably. Done properly it outlasts vinyl by a wide margin.

Engineered wood

Gives you a real-wood look and a lighter, easier install than fiber cement, at a price point that usually lands between vinyl and fiber cement.

It is an engineered wood product, which means moisture management at the seams and cut ends matters more than it does with vinyl or fiber cement. Installed and sealed correctly it performs well for a long time. Installed carelessly, it is the material most likely to disappoint.

Metal

Steel and aluminum siding shrug off hail, do not rot, do not feed insects, and hold paint or a factory finish for a long time. It is a legitimate option in hail-prone or wildfire-exposed areas, not just a commercial-building material.

The trade-off is upfront cost and a more limited pool of installers who do it well on residential homes. Dents are also permanent in a way that vinyl's flex is not.

How to actually decide

Answer three questions in order. How much ongoing maintenance are you honestly willing to do? What does your climate throw at a wall — hail, humidity, wildfire exposure, freeze-thaw? And how long do you plan to own the house?

Those three answers usually narrow the field to one or two materials, and at that point the decision mostly makes itself rather than requiring a debate about brands.

Common questions

Is fiber cement worth the extra cost over vinyl?

If you intend to keep the paint schedule and want a more rigid, impact-resistant panel, yes. If you want the lowest-maintenance option and are comfortable with a plastic panel's look and limits, vinyl is a reasonable choice rather than a lesser one.

Does insulated vinyl actually save meaningful energy?

It adds a little R-value and, more usefully, a lot of rigidity, so the panels lie flatter against the wall and dent less. Buy it for durability and a straighter-looking wall. Treat any specific energy-savings number with skepticism.

Can I mix siding materials on one house?

Yes, and it is common on accent areas like gables or a porch. The transition detail between the two materials is where water management has to be done carefully, so make sure whoever is quoting it can describe how that joint gets flashed.
